It's the second English lesson on Wednesday when Mrs. Petersen, our English teacher, comes in with cutlery, bowls, jelly, berries and cream. She puts the things on the teacher's desk. Then she starts: "We make Trifle today. Luke, in our book, eats this English dessert on his birthday. I now divide groups." I join Cristian, Julia and Noela in a group. We pour the cream into the measuring cup, then the girls whip the cream. Next to us sponge fingers are cut, other pupils prepare jelly and berries. The cream is ready, now we can eat the leftover cream. Hmmmm, that tastes good! Mrs. Petersen takes two bowls: one big and one small bowl. In the small bowl we put the vegetarian trifle, so without jelly, because gelatine is in it. And there’s a big bowl for trifle with jelly!
The nice thing about preparing trifle is: We didn’t say any phrase in German, only in English.
But back to the dessert: Soon the bowls are empty (RATZEKAHL). We also eat the crumbs, yummy! Trifle is a super delicious dessert with and without jelly. It is fast and easy to make and you can be sure: It is a hit on parties!
Well: Buy the things and prepare your own trifle. Here is the original English recipe: For a trifle you need:
- 1 sponge cake or 1 packet of sponge fingers
- (1 packet of jelly, water)
- A packet of custard or Straciatella-cream, milk
- 500 g of fresh or tinned berries (Deutsch=Beeren)
- 250 ml of cream
Break small pieces of cake into a big glass bowl. Slice the berries and put them in the bowl. Prepare the jelly, leave it to cool and pour it over the cake and berries. Carefully put the bowl in your fridge. Prepare the custard and pour it on the jelly. Leave it to cool. Whip the cream and put it on top.
